Industrial Ring Network Switch Ring Network Testing
Release time:
2026-03-24
With the advent of the Industrial Internet of Things communication era, industrial switches are being deployed more and more widely. When an industrial switch malfunctions, how can we quickly verify whether its configuration is correct by examining its ports? Below, we introduce a debugging method: the industrial switch loopback test.
What is an industrial switch loopback test?
A loopback test is a testing method commonly used to diagnose and analyze port or line issues. It involves sending a signal from a communication device and having it return (loop back) to the original source, thereby determining whether the device is functioning properly or identifying the location of a failed node in the network.
When the fault symptoms allow for a preliminary diagnosis of a line‑related issue, the usual approach is to start at one end of the equipment and perform loopback tests, routing the signal back toward that device through the nearest node, then progressively moving to the next‑level node, and so on. By repeatedly looping back from multiple distinct nodes to the same device, you can pinpoint the exact segment between two nodes where the problem lies. This method is known as segmented loopback testing.
How do you configure loopback scheduling on industrial switch ports?
1. Simplex loopback test
① Insert a full-duplex optical module into the industrial switch.
② Use a fiber-optic loopback module or a simplex fiber optic patch cord to form a loop connecting the transmit and receive ports of an optical module, in order to test the switch.
Are the port and optical module parameters normal?
③ Check the parameters and perform debugging.
2. Duplex loopback test
① Insert two full-duplex optical modules into the industrial switch.
② Then, use two fiber-optic loopback modules or a duplex fiber-optic patch cord to form a loop connecting the two optical modules, and verify whether the optical modules’ transmission rate is…
Ensure it matches the operating speed of the switch port and verify that the connection is functioning properly.
③ Check the parameters and perform debugging.
The above content describes a testing method for the ring network of industrial Ethernet switches. We hope it is helpful to you!
