Switching Technologies in Networking – The OSI Seven-Layer Model

From the birth of the Internet in 1969 to 2019, the Internet has reached its 50th anniversary. Today, concepts such as IoT, AI, wireless technologies, and cloud services are advancing at breakneck speed, and none of these innovations could be realized without the Internet.

In March 1978, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) established a standard framework for interconnecting computers and communication systems, commonly known as the OSI seven-layer model.

This seven-layer model illustrates the seven steps that any piece of data must go through to communicate between devices.
If we liken a city’s network to a wide-area network, then local networks—such as a company intranet or a home network—are like local-area networks. A vast number of these LANs interconnect and converge to form a WAN, while multiple WANs link together to constitute the Internet. It’s much like how numerous small streams merge into larger rivers, such as the Yangtze and the Yellow River, which eventually flow into the sea—the ocean, in this analogy, represents the Internet.

A local area network (LAN) operates at the data link layer and relies on switching technology, while a wide area network (WAN) operates at the network layer and depends on routing technology. Each plays its own role, enabling data to communicate across different regions, cities, and even countries.

The local area network operates at the data link layer (Layer 2), and data exchange relies on switching technology; industrial switches are the primary devices at this layer. For users, whether they’re sending messages on QQ or logging into Zhihu to learn, if the LAN encounters issues and communication breaks down, even the fastest broadband connection and dedicated leased‑line bandwidth won’t enable internet access. Therefore, the stability of industrial switches is of paramount importance.
